Carsey/Werner Gala -- October 5

I suppose one of the perks of being on a television show is that you get invited to attend random Hollywood events. Tonight's random Hollywood event was a gala in honor of Marcy Carsey and Tom Werner, the producing team behind such hits as The Cosby Show, Roseanne, Cybill, Grace under Fire, and many others.

David and his wife went as well, and the four of us, including Lisa Cerasoli, were seated together. At Table 234. Table two-hundred-and-thirty-four. That's a lot of tables between us and the front of the room. But, hey, we're new to this whole Hollywood scene. We can handle sitting in the back of the room. There was still free booze and a fine steak dinner to be enjoyed. And there were fun clips to watch and nice speeches were given.

And so I was fine with the distinction of Table 234. I was enjoying myself. But the real slight came late in the evening when Tom Werner was giving his 'thank you' speech and he was listing a number of writers that had written on their shows who had gone on to do other wonderful things, mostly big TV successes. But when he mentioned Alan Ball, he said that he had gone on to write American Beauty. That's it. No nod to the new show their old friend Alan has created. No mention of the fledgling show trying to spread its wings. And certainly no shout-out to the boys at Table 234.

Don't they know who we are? Actually, come to think of it, it seems like they do.
