overall rating / overall share / 18-49 year-olds rating
October 7, 1999
RRRrrrrrr.... Not great. We're down in every category and we fell back into second place in the 18-49 year-old demographic. Our overall retention was 77% and just under 79% in the demo. West Wing seems to have found a resurgence (thanks to s strong Dateline, I imagine) and wrested the top-spot for the night from Drew Carey. Those are some negative signs. I hope they are not trends.
The mitigating factor this week is baseball. The playoffs are going to cause some unusual numbers. Sometimes they can work in your favor, if the game is a lame one or if West Wing gets pre-empted for it. This week that was not the case. The game did some strong numbers, especially late in the game when we could be hurt most.
No need to panic just yet. Just keep holding our breath and hoping Drew
can bring us more fans. We have to believe we'll find our audience soon.
Industry interpretation...

Another powerful performance by Law & Order helped NBC squeak past ABC in adults 18-49 on Wednesday, while the debut of Roswell gave the WB its second highest-rated series premiere ever in adults 18-49. Law, together with the third outing of The West Wing, propelled NBC over ABC.
The debut of Roswell was #3 in the time period among women 18-34 and adults 18-34 -- defeating CBS, Fox, and UPN -- and was #2 among persons 12-34.

[Note: The ratings reported on October 13 had Oh Grow Up getting a 5.3 in the 18-49 demo, not 5.5 as reported the morning after it aired.]
Roswell landed on the WB Wednesday schedule with the netlet's second-best premiere adults 18-34 ratings ever. NBC led the night, as The West Wing improved to a close second-place finish for its hour in adults 18-49. Wednesday's rookie sitcoms lacked punch, with CBS' Work With Me retaining just 89% of its 18-49 lead-in and ABC's Oh Grow Up settling for 76%, both well below expectations for their slots.

In the 18-49 race, NBC won the week with a 5.1, with its Wednesday drama The West Wing posting 6% growth over the previous week among 18-49 and 5% in total viewers.
