overall rating / overall share / 18-49 year-olds rating

Yes, we took a hit in the ratings going up against the World Series, but that was to be expected. And yes, our retention is back down, but that was also to be expected. What impresses me is that I expected a lot worse. Our numbers two weeks ago against the Yankees/Red Sox games were terrible, deadly in fact. If we had gotten those numbers in a non-baseball week, we would really be in trouble. Again last night we were up against baseball, but last night the numbers did not return to those abysmal numbers. Sure they weren't as strong as last week, but you have to compare apples to apples. When you look at the 'vs. baseball' trend, we improved.
OK, maybe I'm just working too hard to spin the numbers. Truthfully, I think this week's numbers are nearly insignificant. Sure, if we had gone below 6 or above 10 someone would have taken notice, but the specter of the World Series is too grand. We did fine. The more telling numbers will appear next Thursday morning once baseball is behind us.
Man, how does anybody launch a new TV show around here?
Industry interpretation...
November 3, 1999
"Facing the climactic game of the World Series, the WB's Dawson's Creek and Roswell plus Fox's Get Real hit lowest-yet firstrun homes ratings, while Beverly Hills 90210 slipped to its lowest since Jan 3, 1991. A special King of Queens rerun showed Wednesday promise, building by 43% on its Cosby 18-49 lead-in vs. an average 4% drop for struggling slot regular Work with Me."
--Variety
"Through the first six weeks of the season, ABC is down by double digits in adults 18-49 on Wednesdays. The peacock has notched an 18% hike Wednesdays. The WB is posting 18-49 declines Wednesdays. UPN has turned around last season's sinking ship and its demo numbers are growing Wednesdays as well."

And this is interesting...
