ABC has certainly found a magic bullet in their Millionaire show. Every night it turns in fabulous numbers, and in the case of last night, it boosted the numbers of the shows around it, too. Drew aired a live, partial-improv show last night that was a huge hit and gave Norm, airing in our slot, a huge lead-in. Norm's numbers were much better than ours ever were in the timeslot just as ABC had anticipated.
Or were they? Drew Carey may have proven incompatible with anyone. Norm drew the same percentage of viewers as we were drawing in the slot. They retained around 80%. That suggests that we weren't a complete failure after all. If Norm is considered one of their hit shows, then our performance to date would have to also be considered that of a 'hit show.' Right?
Oh, it's all just how you look at it anyway. Who am I kidding? We
have to keep hoping for the support of the network. And we have still
not received any word on whether or not the Back Nine will be picked up.
Industry interpretation...
November 12, 1999
"ABC continued its winning ways Wednesday as Who Wants to Be a Millionaire and the live telecast of The Drew Carey Show drove the network to its highest ratings since March. Carey pulled off a first in primetime by staging live editions of the sitcom in three time zones. Viewers rewarded the troupers' effort by driving the sitcom to its highest adults 18-49 score since March 1998. That rating marked a 29% spike over its season-to-date average, but more importantly Carey built by 21% on its Millionaire demo lead-in. Carey's lead-out Norm benefitted from the halo effect, raising its highest total viewers tally and tying its best adults 18-49 score."

"ABC's Who Wants to Be a Millionaire continues to suffer slight devaluations as its November run continues, but Wednesday's seg helped lift every one of the show's ABC skedmates to season-best ratings. Most impressively, a live Drew Carey at 9pm drew that series' liveliest 18-49 numbers since March 11, 1998. Overall, it was ABC's top Wednesday viewer count since March."

"Millionaire minted season-high ratings for each of its ABC skedmates. UPN topped the WB's new Wednesday lineup in total viewers for the first time."
