Oh Grow Up Review
Mr Showbiz, September 15, 1999
TIME SLOT: 9:30 p.m., Wednesdays
PREMIERE DATE: Sept. 22
CAST: Stephen Dunham, David Alan Basche, John Ducey, Rena Sofer, and Niesha Trout
CHANCES OF SURVIVAL: 4 out of 10
CONCEPT: Three former college buddies in their mid-30s, who are on various rungs of the evolutionary ladder, share a huge apartment in Park Slope, Brooklyn. Ladies' man Hunter (Stephen Dunham) is living la vida loca until a surprise visit from his estranged 18-year-old daughter, Chloe (Niesha Trout). The more responsible Norris (David Alan Basche) is a struggling artist who has trouble painting his way out of a sticky situation. And new roomie Ford (John Ducey) just split from his sarcastic wife, Suzanne (Rena Sofer), because, yep, he's gay. All of this craziness under one roof, plus the dog talks!
CRITIQUE: ABC is striking out big time in the comedy department this season, with all three of the network's new sitcoms going up against Two Girls and a Guy (sans Pizza Place) in the world's least funny program category. Oh Grow Up might make you laugh if you like homogeneous-looking adult males who call each other "dude," if you think that subtitling a dog's thoughts is clever, or if you are stoned to the bejeezus on some sort of wacky weed. Everyone else should just use the half-hour after The Drew Carey Show to write ABC a letter of disapproval.
