2000 Football Pool Weekly Update
Playoffs Week One
"Ravens... Didn't Poe write something about this bird signifying death? Hope it's death for the ponies and not me." --Uliana
Quoth the Ravens: Never Score. The Baltimore defense kept Denver out of the end zone all day to provide the only win by a Vegas favorite in a Wild Card weekend that lived up to its name.
"We decided the Baltimore pick was too angst-heavy and are CHANGING our pick to Indianapolis." --Sylwesters, Thursday Night
I appreciate when contestants provide their own quips:
"That pre-pick angst definitely pales in comparison to our post-pick regret." --Sylwesters (RIP), Monday Morning
Regrets abound. But what happened this weekend? How did Indianapolis give up a 14-point lead late in the game to the Miami Dolphins? Why did St. Louis wait until midway through the fourth quarter to turn on their offense? How can a collection of men from all over the country all suddenly become ineffective when the temperature drops below 30 degrees? Ladies and gentlemen, I give you the National Football League.
"I'll take Indianapolis. I mean, seriously. Who would you rather have in a fight? A horse or a fish?" --Manoux~JP
In a 2000 Football Pool fight, it makes sense to have a relative. Take a look at the "families" that were in the pool. Of the 11 names still alive, 8 of them have to be distinguished by a first initial (including the 's' on Dickshots). If you brought a relative to the dance, you improved your chances of success tremendously.
Also consider: of the 17 families that entered the pool, 11 sent at least one person to the playoffs. (The Duceys sent 2 out of 3. The Manouxs sent 3 out of 7.) Even the Sullivans, who appear to have been knocked out in Week 11, are still fighting under the surname Spears, a family friend, and in spirit through their friend Weene.
So who's the lone horseman out there? Uliana? The "family" he arrived with was his softball team, the Mojos. Of their 6 original entrants, one was the first to go (Rivas). Uliana and Ducey~Jo are the two remaining Mojos. Could one of them also be the last to go?
The standings...
00 LOSSES -- 00 Grandmothers & Grandfathers
01 LOSSES -- 02 Moms & Dads
02 LOSSES -- 09 Brothers & Sisters
03 LOSSES -- 120 Crazy Uncles no one talks about
The website has been updated. Thank you for your patience over the holidays.
Week Two of the playoffs is already locked in. We are guaranteed to lose at least two more people by Monday morning. The plot thickens. The pool thins. If you can get your hands on a share of the winnings, it will be at least $145. But hold on tight. After all, it is still the National Football League.
