2002 Football Pool Weekly Update

Week One

Week One is behind us and there were many, many casualties. Nearly a third of the contestants took a loss this week. But hey, at least no one got eliminated, right?

"It's only Week 1 and I'm a Raven lunatic! Baltimore" --Spina

If you are going to succeed in this football pool, you have to learn the lessons from years past. Three lessons I give you from the 2001 football season:

1. Never leave a Bear game early. Mike Brown proved that he's still "Mr. Fourth Quarter" with an late-game interception that sparked the Bears unlikely comeback.

2. Don't mess with Carolina in Week One. Sure, they may go 1-15 again, but Baltimore learned the same thing Minnesota did 52 weeks ago. The Panthers come out growling.

3. Dallas sucks.

"Here's my pick for week one: Dallas. BOOM! Shizam! You might as well give me the money now. I got a plan for the whole season. I'm a lock. I can FEEEEEL it." --Pava, "Sports Genius"

That's the kind of bravado we love in this league. It makes for great quoting.

"Brightbill and Novak both (boringly) pick MIAMI." --Susan Brightbill

And yet that's the kind of picking that pays off.

We'll see how his tune changes when Detroit beats Green Bay in Week Ten to knock him out of the pool.

Picks are due by 10am PST Saturday morning. Do not repeat the pick you made in Week One. You will take a loss if you do.
