"'Heaven'-ly ratings jump propels WB Net to hot start;
Viewers, demos climb in new season
The WB Network has posted double- and triple-ratings increases over
the same period last year with help from Smallville, Gilmore
Girls, Everwood, 7th Heaven, and a resurgent Dawson's
Creek. From the start of the season through last Thursday, the
WB is up 81% in persons 12-34, up 100% in adults 18-34, up 50% in
teens, and up 50% in its core demo of female teens. Its overall
total-viewer tally has climbed 53% to an average of 5.2 million
viewers a week, compared with 3.4 million for the similar period in
2001. Thanks to older-skewing new shows like Everwood, as well
as the Friday comedy Reba, the WB is even on the rise in the
most competitive demo of adults 18-49 and women 18-49. The WB hit
another milestone last week, when, for the first time in the
network's eight-year history, it ranked #2 for two consecutive nights
(Tues & Wed) and #1 in primetime in adults 18-34 and persons
12-34 demos. NBC's one-time powerhouse Providence got off to a
shaky start in its 8pm season premiere, while CBS saw a second week
of encouraging results for new 9pm drama Hack."

"NBC captured the second Friday of the season, but the season preem of Providence at 8 was down 26% in 18-49 from last year and tied with CBS' 48 Hours Investigates for second place in 18-49 behind ABC's America's Funniest Home Videos. CBS improved week-to-week, as Hack retained its solid premiere rating in adults 18-49, placing first. ABC's 9pm drama That Was Then was on par with its weak preem scores."

"The WB has opened up a significant lead over archrival UPN. The WB was up a whopping 50% in its key 18-34 demo last week, while UPN sunk 32%. In its Tuesday slot, Smallville beat not only UPN but also CBS and came within 2 demo share points of ABC."

"Frog netlet gets a jump on season
NBC maintained a healthy demo advantage over its network rivals while
CBS drew the largest audience overall in the second week of the new
season, but it was the WB that had perhaps the best story--
delivering its strongest weekly averages ever in target demos. The
WB, which won consecutive nights in adults 18-34 for the first time
in net history (Tuesday and Wednesday), moved up to fourth in that
demo for the week, edging out baseball-heavy FOX and second in women
18-34. These are the best weekly scores ever for the Frog. Season
premieres of vet dramas Dawson's Creek and Angel
performed very well during the week, which also saw continued boffo
numbers from the likes of 7th Heaven, Gilmore Girls, Smallville,
Reba, and the new Everwood. On Friday, NBC won the
night in adults 18-49, led by Law & Order: SVU, which more
than doubled CBS' struggling Robbery Homicide Division.
Peacock's preem of Providence placed second to ABC's America's
Funniest Home Videos while its Dateline was second to
CBS' Hack, which was up week-to-week. The WB placed second for
the night in females 12-34 with its 9pm comedy Reba scoring
season-high numbers."
