May 1998 -- It has been nearly a year now since we filmed the great Zack & Reba and in that time a few things have happened...
The film was submitted but not accepted to the Sundance Film Festival which is held every January in Park City. It is one of the premiere markets for independent American films, and is where many deals are made to distribute the films nationally. As January came and went, however, no one saw our movie at Sundance and no one had come forward to offer a domestic distribution deal.
There was a cast and crew screening, to which I brought my friend Rachel Reenstra. She liked the movie, but I think the general feeling from people I spoke to was that it was pretty uneven. Parts of the movie were very entertaining while others dragged enough to bring down the whole tone the crazy scenes were trying so hard to create. The result was most likely not something that would appeal to most of America.
The next time I heard any rumblings about Zack & Reba was when it played at the Santa Barbara Film Festival in March. This was certainly another chance for the film to pick up a domestic distributor. I did not attend the screening but heard it was moderately received and that no real interest was shown. Things do not look good for our star-crossed lovers.
